Map style
Vector uses OpenStreetMap data via Protomaps instead of pre-rendered map images — sharper labels, smaller downloads. Needs one source below (a free API key is quickest; a self-hosted .pmtiles file is what enables true offline use — see "Save this area for offline").

When a route is available, alternatives to choose from (e.g. via highway or via ferry) appear under the route summary automatically.
Offline maps & routing
Map tiles you've browsed are cached automatically as you go. On launch, three layers cache automatically: detailed street-level tiles for ~20km around your GPS position (with road data, turn-restriction rules, and nearby fuel/food/parking/etc. places for offline use), a lighter regional layer covering ~1500km (map + search only — routing needs the detailed layer), and a coarse world view so the map never looks blank. The moment you tap Start on a route, the road data (and tiles) along that entire route are cached in the background too — so if you lose signal partway through a longer trip, rerouting still works using the on-device road graph, not just the immediate ~20km around where you started. New routes can be calculated with no connection as long as both ends of the trip fall inside an area you've cached — offline routing respects one-way streets and known no-turn/turn-only rules, and estimates time from each road's actual speed limit where tagged, but instructions are simpler than live routing and there's no traffic data. To be sure a specific area is ready before you lose signal, save it here too.
Automatic caching uses
Applies to all three automatic layers above (local, regional, world). Tapping "Save this area for offline" below always works, on any connection.
Offline search
Destinations you've navigated to are remembered on this device. Saving an area (manually, or automatically on launch) also stores nearby place names — towns and villages close to you, plus major cities across the wider region — and named points of interest (fuel stations, restaurants, cafés, hospitals/pharmacies, hotels, ATMs, EV charging) inside that area, so you can find and re-select any of them with no connection. The category chips above the map (Fuel, Food, Parking, etc.) also switch to this cached list automatically when offline. General free-text place search still needs signal.
Favorite trips
Tap the star on a calculated route to save it by name, along with a strip of map tiles and road data around its path — so that exact trip can be re-loaded and navigated with no connection later. Saved trips appear at the top of the search card. Deleting a trip here removes it from that list; any tiles/road data it cached stay in the general offline cache until cleared above.
